Across the American Southwest with Tefillin: Avrohom Nelken’s Tuffka Story

Long drives, intense desert heat, and the challenge of protecting something sacred while traveling.

Traveling with tefillin can present a practical challenge. You want to keep them close and protected, but carrying them everywhere is not always possible—especially during a long road trip through some of the hottest parts of the United States.

When Avrohom Menachem Nelken flew from Tennessee to California to begin a one-way journey through California, Nevada, and Arizona, he hadn't fully planned for this problem. It only hit him once he landed.

He recalled the moment clearly:

"We got there and thought, 'Wait, we need a place to keep our tefillin where they won't melt. We also can't schlep them with us everywhere.' That's when I realized—wait, we actually have the Tuffka case. That was the particular moment when I thought, we need it."

For Avrohom, the case wasn't just travel gear. It was about protecting something he'd already been careful with for years.

"I have a very good pair of tefillin. Everyone has their mitzvah they're most careful with—for me, it's most definitely tefillin. It has Hashem's name in it, and you're not allowed to simply destroy Hashem's name. So I wanted a case in which I knew it would be safe."

Before Tuffka, he kept his tefillin in a leather bag.

"It was nice, but it wasn't that safe. In this case, it's a lot safer. So I decided it was worth the cost."

Putting it to the test in the desert

Once the trip began, the real question was whether the case could handle it—hours in a parked car, Nevada and Arizona heat, no shade in sight.

"Since the case is black, I decided not to put it directly on the front seat in the sun. Instead, I put it in the back, where the sunlight wasn't directly hitting it. But even with the extreme heat—and I'm talking about longer periods of time, not just five minutes—there were no issues whatsoever. In fact, after the first day, I wasn't even concerned anymore, because I saw that it did a good job."

That confidence built gradually. On the first day, he admitted, he wasn't fully sure.

"I was thinking, is it okay? It should be okay. It should be okay."

That night, he took the tefillin out and checked.

"Everything felt cool. I thought, okay, I know I'm good. From then on, there was no looking back."

He estimates the tefillin sat in the car for a few hours at a time during the trip—and more recently, an entire multi-day camping trip.

"It wasn't hot, but it wasn't cold either, and my tefillin stayed in the Tuffka case the entire time. Honestly, it gave me peace of mind."

Why it matters beyond the heat

For Avrohom, the value isn't only about temperature. It's the combination of protection that makes him comfortable leaving something so important behind.

"They're protected. The case has a little lock on the side. It gives you general security all around, including the small lock. But there's also the fire protection. Honestly, fire is more common than people like to think—certainly a lot more common than randomly winning the lottery. I'm much happier having my tefillin in a case that I know can withstand that, so I don't have to worry about replacing them."

His advice to anyone weighing whether they need one is simple:

"Is it valuable to you—your tefillin or whatever else it is? Get the case. It's worth it. Unless the valuable item is worth less than the cost of the case. But if it's not, get the case."

Protect what matters to you.
